How can I check if DNS scavenging is working?

To check if DNS scavenging is working, follow these steps:

  • Open the Event Viewer on the DNS server. To do this, click the Start button and select Administrative Tools, then select Event Viewer.
  • In the Event Viewer, expand the “Applications and Services Logs” folder, then expand the “DNS Server” folder, and select the “Operational” log.
  • Look for events with an Event ID of 2501. These events indicate that DNS scavenging has run and that stale DNS records have been removed from the cache.
  • Check the timestamps on the Event ID 2501 events to ensure that they are occurring at the expected intervals. By default, DNS scavenging runs every 7 days, but this can be adjusted in the DNS server properties.
  • Look for events with an Event ID of 2502. These events indicate that DNS scavenging has completed without errors.

If you see Event ID 2501 events with the expected timestamps, it indicates that DNS scavenging is working and that stale DNS records are being removed from the cache. If you do not see these events or see errors in the Event Viewer, it may be necessary to troubleshoot DNS scavenging issues, such as incorrect scavenging settings or permissions issues.

So, that’s all in this blog. I will meet you soon with next stuff. Have a nice day!!!
