Azure AD Connect / Entra Connect – Version History Overview

Azure AD Connect, recently rebranded as Entra Connect, serves as a critical tool for organizations looking to bridge their on-premises directories with Azure Active Directory (Azure AD). Since its initial release in 2015, it has evolved significantly, offering features such as seamless single sign-on, password synchronization, and comprehensive identity management solutions.

Entra Connect not only streamlines hybrid identity configurations but also enhances security and performance through continual updates. As organizations increasingly migrate to the cloud, understanding the version history and feature evolution of Entra Connect becomes essential for leveraging its full potential in modern identity management strategies.

Year Version Key Notes
2014 Azure AD Connect 1.0 First public release (DirSync replacement)
2016–2019 1.x series Numerous sync engine improvements, AD FS integration, device writeback
2021 Azure AD Connect 2.0 Major shift: SQL 2019 LocalDB, TLS 1.2 enforcement, Windows Server 2016+ only
2022–2024 2.1–2.4 Stability, security patches, cloud sync enhancements
2025 2.5.79.0 Mandatory upgrade version due to backend service hardening
2026 2.6.x Latest releases, ongoing improvements

Microsoft’s documentation highlights that all sync services will stop working after September 30, 2026 if you are not running at least version 2.5.79.0.

This is the most important change in the product’s history.

Why Microsoft Released New Versions

a. Security Enhancements

  • TLS 1.2 enforcement
  • Removal of deprecated authentication libraries
  • Hardened sync engine
  • Improved certificate handling
  • Stricter API permissions

b. Platform Requirements

  • Azure AD Connect 2.x requires:
    • Windows Server 2016 or later
    • SQL Server 2019 LocalDB
    • .NET Framework updates

c. Cloud Integration Improvements

  • Better support for:
    • Cloud‑only groups
    • Hybrid join
    • Password hash sync
    • Pass‑through authentication
    • Seamless SSO

d. Performance & Reliability

  • Faster sync cycles
  • Improved scheduler
  • Better error handling
  • More stable upgrade paths

What’s New in the Latest Versions (2.5.x and 2.6.x)

Based on Microsoft’s official release notes:

Mandatory Security Hardening (May 2025)

Version 2.5.79.0 introduced backend service changes that require all customers to upgrade before September 30, 2026.

If you don’t upgrade:

  • Sync will stop working
  • No identities will sync to Entra ID
  • Authentication and access may break

 Improved Sync Engine

  • Application based authentication
  • Better handling of large directories
  • More efficient delta sync
  • Reduced memory footprint

Improved Certificate Management

  • Automatic certificate renewal
  • Better error reporting
  • More secure service principal binding

Bug Fixes & Stability

  • Fixes for upgrade failures
  • Fixes for sync rule corruption
  • Fixes for SQL LocalDB issues

Benefits of Upgrading to the Latest Entra Connect Version

1. Security Compliance

Microsoft is enforcing new backend security standards. Older versions will stop syncing after September 2026.

2. Better Performance

  • Faster sync cycles
  • More efficient processing
  • Improved scheduler reliability

3. Support for New Entra ID Features

New features require new sync engine capabilities, including:

  • Cloud‑only group writeback
  • Enhanced hybrid join
  • Modern authentication improvements

4. Reduced Risk of Outages

New versions fix:

  • Database corruption issues
  • Upgrade failures
  • Sync rule bugs

5. Long‑term Support

Microsoft supports only the latest version of Entra Connect. Older versions quickly become unsupported.

Why Microsoft Requires a Mandatory Upgrade (2025–2026)

Microsoft announced that all synchronization services must be on version 2.5.79.0 or later by September 30, 2026. This is due to:

  • Backend service hardening
  • Security protocol updates
  • API deprecations
  • Identity platform modernization

This is the first time Microsoft has enforced a mandatory upgrade with a hard cutoff date.

Where to Download Older Versions

To download older versions of Azure AD Connect (now known as Entra Connect), you can follow a few simple steps. First, visit the Microsoft Download Center and search for “Azure AD Connect,” where you’ll find a section dedicated to older versions.

Alternatively, you can log in to the Azure Portal, navigate to Azure Active Directory, and then select Azure AD Connect; there should be options to  downloading latest version directly from there.

Additionally, it’s a good idea to check the official Microsoft documentation for Azure AD Connect on the Microsoft Docs site, as they often provide helpful links and instructions for obtaining older versions.

Summary

Microsoft Entra Connect has evolved significantly since 2014. The latest versions (2.5.x and 2.6.x) bring:

  • Stronger security
  • Better performance
  • Improved cloud integration
  • Mandatory compliance requirements

If your organization still runs an older version, upgrading is no longer optional — it is required to keep identity synchronization working beyond September 2026.
