November updates break ODBC database connections

Hello All,

Hope this post finds you in good health and spirit.

November updates break ODBC database connections

After applying the November 2022 Patch Tuesday Windows updates, there is a new known problem impacting apps using ODBC database connections that Microsoft is trying to resolve.

Microsoft claims that impacted apps may not be able to establish connections to databases using the Microsoft ODBC SQL Server driver.

Apps that use ODBC connections using the Microsoft ODBC SQL Server Driver (sqlsrv32.dll) to access databases may experience connectivity issues after installing this update, as per Microsoft.

Additionally, the app itself might breakdown or the SQL Server could issue an error. On the affected systems, users may possibly encounter the following errors:

  • There was an issue with the EMS System. Protocol issue in TDS Stream: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver].
  • There was an issue with the EMS System. the following message: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver] Received an unknown token from SQL Server.

From Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 SP2 to the most recent versions of Windows 11 and Windows Server 2022, the known vulnerability affects both client and server Windows systems.

How to check if your apps are affected

The steps listed below can be used by Windows users to see whether any of their applications use ODBC connections to connect to databases and may be impacted by this known problem:

  1. Open any apps which use a database and then open Command Prompt (select Start, then type command prompt and select it)

  2. On the Command Prompt, type the following command:

tasklist /m sqlsrv32.dll

upcoming updates to solve issues with Windows applications and database connections

For temporary workarounds to database connection issues with applications on Windows devices, Microsoft has not provided any solutions. Users may verify whether any application on their computer is using the problematic SQL Server driver, though.

Microsoft is currently investigating a remedy, which is expected to be released in the December Patch Tuesday releases. It’s still unknown how many Windows customers who installed Patch Tuesday last month were impacted by this flaw. But it’s truly awful to see Microsoft having to cope with problematic Windows updates once more. Another LSASS memory leak problem that results in freezes and reboots on some domain controllers is already being looked upon by the firm (DCs).

So, that’s all in this blog. I will meet you soon with next stuff .Have a nice day !!!
