Active Directory

What are the advantages of using ADLDS over a full Active Directory deployment?

There are several advantages of using ADLDS (Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services) over a full Active Directory deployment. Some of the main advantages are:

  1. Lightweight and flexible: ADLDS is designed to be lightweight and flexible, and can be customized to meet the needs of different applications and services. ADLDS instances can be deployed on servers that do not require domain controller functionality, which can reduce hardware and licensing costs.
  2. Customizable schema: ADLDS provides a customizable schema that can be tailored to meet the specific needs of an application or service. This allows organizations to store application-specific data in the directory without affecting the schema of the full Active Directory deployment.
  3. Improved security: ADLDS provides strong security features, such as SSL/TLS encryption, password policies, and support for various authentication protocols, including LDAP, Kerberos, and NTLM. This helps to ensure the security and privacy of the directory data.
  4. Separate management: ADLDS instances can be managed separately from the full Active Directory deployment, using the Active Directory Users and Computers (ADUC) snap-in or the Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services Setup Wizard. This can make it easier to manage and maintain the directory service.
  5. Scalability: ADLDS is scalable and can be deployed in a distributed environment, with multiple instances replicating directory data. This can provide high availability and scalability for applications and services that require directory services functionality.

Overall, using ADLDS over a full Active Directory deployment can provide a lightweight, flexible, and cost-effective solution for organizations that require directory services functionality for their applications and services. ADLDS can be tailored to meet the specific needs of an application or service, while still providing strong security features and scalability.
