Active Directory

What is ADLDS?

ADLDS stands for Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services. It is a lightweight version of Active Directory that provides directory services for applications and services that do not require the full functionality of Active Directory. ADLDS was previously known as ADAM (Active Directory Application Mode) before it was renamed by Microsoft in Windows Server 2008.

ADLDS is designed to run on servers that do not require domain controller functionality, such as web servers, application servers, or network appliances. ADLDS provides a standalone directory service that can be used to store application-specific data, such as user accounts, security groups, and configuration information.

Some of the key features of ADLDS include:

  • Lightweight directory service: ADLDS is designed to be lightweight and can run on servers that do not require domain controller functionality.
  • Flexible schema: ADLDS provides a flexible schema that can be customized to meet the needs of different applications and services.
  • Lightweight replication: ADLDS supports lightweight replication, which allows directory data to be replicated between ADLDS instances in a flexible and efficient manner.
  • Secure authentication: ADLDS supports various authentication protocols, including LDAP, Kerberos, and NTLM, and provides strong security features, such as SSL/TLS encryption and password policies.
  • Manageability: ADLDS can be managed using the Active Directory Users and Computers (ADUC) snap-in or the Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services Setup Wizard, which provides a simple and intuitive interface for configuring and managing ADLDS instances.

Overall, ADLDS provides a flexible and lightweight directory service that can be used to support a wide range of applications and services that require directory services functionality but do not require the full capabilities of Active Directory.
