Active Directory

What is the difference between a schema and a class?

In Active Directory, a schema and a class are related concepts, but they have different meanings and purposes.

A schema is the overall structure that defines the rules for creating, modifying, and deleting objects in the directory. The schema defines the object classes, attributes, and syntaxes that are used to represent and store data in the directory. The schema is a global object that is shared by all domain controllers in the forest.

On the other hand, a class is a specific type of object defined in the schema. A class represents a group of objects that share common characteristics or attributes. For example, the User class represents all user accounts in the directory, and the Computer class represents all computer objects in the directory.

In other words, the schema defines the overall structure and rules for the directory, while a class is a specific type of object that is defined within that structure. A class is defined in the schema and has a set of attributes and rules that determine how objects of that class can be created, modified, and deleted.

To summarize, the main differences between a schema and a class are:

  • A schema is the overall structure that defines the rules for the directory, while a class is a specific type of object defined within that structure.
  • The schema is a global object that is shared by all domain controllers in the forest, while classes are specific to each domain or partition in the directory.
  • The schema defines the attributes and syntaxes that are used to represent and store data in the directory, while a class defines the rules for creating, modifying, and deleting objects of that type.
