What permissions are required for DNS scavenging to work?
To enable DNS scavenging on a Windows Server, the DNS server computer account must have the “Write” permission to the DNS zone where scavenging is being configured. Here are the steps to modify the permissions:
- Open the DNS Manager on the DNS server. To do this, click the Start button and select Administrative Tools, then select DNS.
- In the DNS Manager, right-click on the DNS zone where scavenging is being configured and select Properties.
- In the Properties window, select the Security tab.
- Click the Add button and enter the name of the DNS server computer account.
- Select the “Write” permission for the DNS server computer account and click OK.
- Click OK to save the changes.
By granting the DNS server computer account the “Write” permission to the DNS zone, the DNS server will have the necessary permissions to perform DNS scavenging and remove stale DNS records from the cache. It is also important to ensure that the DNS server computer account has the necessary permissions to access the DNS server and perform other tasks related to DNS resolution.
