Diagnose memory problems on your PC
When you are notified that your PC may have a memory problem, tap or click the notification to select one of two times to run the Memory Diagnostics Tool: now or later. We suggest that you restart the system right away. The Memory Diagnostics Tool will launch immediately once you restart your computer, and it may take several minutes to complete its memory check. If the programme detects faults, you should contact your PC maker for assistance in resolving them, as memory errors typically signal a problem with your PC’s memory chips or other hardware issues.
To run the Memory Diagnostics Tool manually
You can run the Windows Memory Diagnostics programme manually if it does not run automatically.
- Open the Memory Diagnostics Tool by tapping or clicking.
- Administrator privileges are necessary. You may be asked for an administrator password or to confirm your selection.
- When to run the tool is up to you.
- After restarting your computer, the Memory Diagnostics Tool will launch.
- Tap or click Desktop on the Start screen once the Memory Diagnostics Tool has finished and Windows has restarted. The results of the test will be displayed in a Windows Memory Diagnostic message. The Memory Diagnostics Tool findings may also be found in Event Viewer.

- Swipe in from the right side of the screen, touch Search (or, if using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse cursor down, and then click Search), type Event Viewer in the search box, tap or click Settings, and then tap or click See event logs.
- Under Windows Logs, tap or click System, and then under Actions, tap or click Filter Current Log.
- Tap or click the Event sources drop-down menu, choose MemoryDiagnostics-Results, and then tap or click OK.
- Click an event in the filtered list to display its results.

- To change the settingsPress F1 when the Memory Diagnostics Tool loads.
- You can change the following options:
- Mix it up. Choose whether you wish to perform a Basic, Standard, or Extended test. The tool describes the options.
- Cache. For each test, select the cache setting: Default, On, or Off.
- Passing counts. Choose the number of times you wish the exam to be repeated.
- To start the test, press F10.
